Summer is finally here! Here are our top 5 activities you can do in the Inner West over the summer. 

1. Build Your Own Terrarium World - Dulwich Hill

Don't have the time or space to have your own garden at home? A terrarium is the perfect inexpensive and practical solution.  Learn to build your own living world in this hands-on terrarium workshop in Dulwich Hill. 

Participants will discover how a miniature ecosystem thrives and will also get to decorate their terrariums with unique hand-carved soap stone animals.

2. Heaps Decent DJ-ing Workshop 

Dive in to the world of DJ'ing with this free workshop in Haberfield.  In the session you'll learn  how to use music that you love and connect with to  start to understand some of the elements that are used to great effect in production.  

The decks are an instrument unto themselves, allowing the user to manipulate mixes, tempo and pitch, and to use a range of effects like sampling, looping and scratching.

Participants can discover how elemental and shared musical instincts are and be introduced to a range of techniques that are used to create a great atmosphere and uplift the human spirit with music.

Suitable for ages 13-18.

3. Natural Scent Blending Workshop for Youth

If you appreciate the notes of a good perfume,  this beginner-friendly workshop is right up your alley.  Learn about the most popular essential oils for blending and the fundamentals of creating a balanced aromatic blend. 

Participants will create a 10ml roll-on perfume and a matching, natural jar of hand cream to take home,  with all ingredients ethically-sourced and supplied on the day.

4. Digital Sculptures and Augmented Reality Workshop

Dip your feet into the world of augemented reality with this free visual workshop in Marrickville.  The workshop brings together traditional media and current technology to transform space. Participants are then encouraged to use their imagination to create objects in response to a theme.  

Using coloured modelling clay, they then sculpt shapes and images, which are then 3D scanned and ported to augmented reality. These sculptures can appear anywhere using a phone app, bringing them to life in the surrounding environment, and changing the notion of traditional viewing spaces. 

Suitable for ages 12-15.

5. Introduction to Embroidery with Amy Jones

Explore the intricate work of embroidery Inner West textile artist Amy Jones (also known as Grandpa Cat) in this fun introduction embroidery workshop. Students will learn a variety of stitches, be able to complete a floral embroidery hoop to display and be guided to create their own unique design.

All the materials for the workshop will be provided including: embroidery hoop, linen for stitching, threads in a variety of colours, needles, daisy pattern and stitch guide and ongoing access to stitch demonstration videos.

This workshop is suitable for adults.
